Which material is better for door and window sealing strips?

At present, the common door and window sealing strips on the market are mainly used in architectural decorative doors and windows such as plastic steel doors and windows, aluminum alloy doors and windows, and wooden doors and windows. There are three common materials, namely EPDM, silicone rubber, and PVC.

In the door and window industry, there has always been a controversy, which material is better for sealing strips? Because the investment in door and window sealing strips is small, but its role cannot be ignored. The sealing strip should not only be waterproof, dustproof, and windproof, but also energy-saving, warm, and soundproof.

In fact, whether it is good or not, and who is better, are all matters of opinion. These three raw materials have their own advantages. However, factors such as the manufacturer of the door and window sealing strips, the content of raw materials, and production technology must also be considered. In addition, the performance requirements of the application scenario are also important.

EPDM is a copolymer of ethylene, propylene, and a small amount of a third monomer non-conjugated diene. The international name is ethylene propylene diene or EPDM.

EPDM is a hard rubber with excellent properties among rubbers. It is anti-aging, anti-corrosion, and ozone-resistant. It does not shrink at low temperatures, is relatively stable, and can be used continuously for more than ten years without changing quality.

EPDM sealing strips are formed in one step using a microwave vulcanization process. They have a smooth and beautiful surface, good elasticity and resistance to compression deformation, are resistant to weathering and aging, have good stability, are not easily deformed in high temperature environments, and are not easily shrunk in low temperature environments. It can be said that it is not only heat-resistant, but also cold-resistant. It can be used in an environment of -50 to 135 °C.

Silicone rubber refers to a rubber whose main chain is composed of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms, and the silicon atom is usually connected to two organic groups. Ordinary silicone rubber is mainly composed of siloxane segments containing methyl and a small amount of vinyl. The introduction of phenyl can improve the high and low temperature resistance of silicone rubber, while the introduction of trifluoropropyl and cyano can improve the temperature resistance and oil resistance of silicone rubber.

Silicone rubber has good low temperature resistance and can generally still work at -55 °C. After the introduction of phenyl, it can reach -73 °C. The heat resistance of silicone rubber is also outstanding. It can work for a long time at 180 ° C, can withstand temperatures slightly above 200 ° C for several weeks or longer while still being elastic, and can withstand high temperatures above 300 ° C instantly.

Silicone rubber has good air permeability, and its oxygen permeability is the highest among synthetic polymers.

The main raw material of silicone sealing strips is silicone rubber, so it has good insulation properties, high and low temperature resistance, good resilience, and more importantly, no odor.

Silicone rubber sealing strips are not only beautiful and colorful, soft to the touch, and extremely elastic when stretched, but also have the characteristics of aging resistance, compression resistance, and water intrusion resistance. And it also has good performance in energy saving and environmental protection, sound insulation and noise reduction, and UV resistance. It can effectively solve the problem of reduced sealing of wooden doors due to sinking during long-term use.

Some unscrupulous manufacturers will produce inferior silicone sealing strips with less glue content. Such strips have poor gloss and will age within a few years.

The main component of PVC sealing strips is polyvinyl chloride, and other ingredients such as plasticizers are added to enhance its heat resistance, toughness, ductility, etc. PVC sealing strips are easy to shape, recyclable and reusable.

PVC sealing strips can be said to be the least recommended of the three. Because it is easy to soften in high temperature environment in summer, the grease on the surface of the sealing strip is precipitated, stained with dust, yellowed (oil is easy to absorb soil) and leaked; it becomes hard and easy to break in winter, and its sealing performance is very poor, but it still has an advantage, that is, it is cheap.
